A/Prof Ross Haslam Retires
A/Professor Ross Haslam has recently retired from his private practice. Paediatrics at Burnside is honoured to have had him practicing with us for over seven years. We have benefited hugely from his support, wisdom, clinical excellence, gentleness and leadership over that time. He contributed and lead in building a strongly collegial culture amongst our clinicians and was an early and enthusiastic supporter of our neonatal roster and our commitment to ensure that all newborns in Burnside, especially, and also Calvary Hospitals had ready and high quality specialist cover in their first days.
We know many of his patients and families have fond memories of his calm and thorough care and guidance.
He primarily saw young babies and toddlers. He was the Head of the Neonatal Medicine Department at first at the Queen Victoria Hospital and then the Women’s and Children’s Hospital from 1979 – 2011. He is a Clinical Associate Professor in both the disciplines of Paediatrics and Obstetrics and Gynaecology at the University of Adelaide’s Faculty of Health Sciences. He retired from active clinical care at the Women’s and Children’s Hospital in May 2014.
After caring for critically ill and premature newborns for many years and following their progress as they grew older, he then established a part time private practice to care for babies and toddlers at Paediatrics at Burnside. His special interest and expertise was for the newly born and their subsequent nutrition, growth and development as well as general problems during the first years of life.
He is an author of over 150 scientific papers, book chapters and invited lectures related to the care of newborns. In 2012 he was made an Officer of the Order of Australia for his work in the field of Perinatal and Neonatal Medicine.
We wish him a happy and relaxing retirement with his wife, children and grandchildren.
