Neurology referral options

NEUROLOGY SPECIALISTS' BOOKS ARE CLOSED.
Unfortunately, both neurologists, Dr Romain Briest and Dr Kerrie-Anne Chen have closed their books to new patients as of 05/12/2023 for the foreseeable future due to long waiting lists and reduced consulting availability.

Dr Chen has closed her Private Practice (March 2024). No other neurologist is setting up private practice in association with us to take on newly referred patients or those on the waiting list.

Referral options for new neurology concerns:

  • Public Paediatric Neurology Services: GPs can refer children to the Paediatric Neurology services at the Women's and Children's Hospital (WCH), Flinders Medical Centre (FMC)

  • An interstate-based paediatric neurologist: An interstate Paediatric Neurologist may see the child in a combination of in-rooms and Video consultation. Parents may need to travel interstate for at least the initial appointment.

  • Other private paediatric neurologists may commence private practice at a later date.

  • A General Paediatrician.

    • Some paediatricians have interest and experience in neurology and can assess and manage patients with milder neurology conditions or assist in managing more complex patients. Some neurology concerns, including uncomplicated Epilepsy, can be managed or resolved with a Paediatrician alone. Several paediatricians associated with Prosper Paediatrics can help with neurological concerns.

    • Referral may be appropriate to a General Paediatrician:

      • In private practice or

      • Through the General Paediatric Outpatients services at the Women's and Children's, Flinders or Lyall McEwan (LMH) Hospitals. The WCH Neurology Department is currently redirecting referrals to General Paediatrics wherever appropriate.

  • An Adult Neurologist: Young people 16 years of age or older may be able to see an adult Neurologist.

Our website provides information about the various associated Paediatric Specialists, their fees and booking policies.

The current non-urgent new patient waiting times for general paediatric appointments are around 24 months.  However, unassessed or unstable neurology concerns are generally triaged as having a higher priority for earlier appointments.

Referrals are medically triaged, and any specific indication of urgency is always appreciated. Cancellation lists are carefully managed.

General paediatrician patients triaged as more urgent are prioritised for earlier appointment offers. However, other patients may also receive offers.

If parents are keen and flexible, we are reasonably confident that an earlier appointment can be provided.

If your GP has referred you to a Neurologist, discuss these referral options with them. If you wish to book an appointment with a suitable General Paediatrician, ask your GP to send a referral for this and complete the

APPOINTMENT REQUEST FORM.
