Dr Lydia Kennedy | Consultant Neonatologist
MBBS, DCH, FRACP | ABN 97 763 151 896
I provide specialist care to children in their first few years of life. I am a visiting medical specialist at Calvary North Adelaide Hospital and at Burnside War Memorial Hospital.
I feel very privileged to care for children from their first ever birthday, in hospital after delivery and then in any needed follow-up care in my practice based in Prosper Paediatrics’ rooms at Toorak Gardens (Burnside Hospital and North Adelaide. I have particular expertise in the care of preterm newborns and those with greater health care needs as well as in supporting the development of healthy infants within their families. I am interested in the care of infants with typical and atypical growth, development and attachment over the first few years of life.
I also work with the South Australian Paediatric and Neonatal Retrieval Service, SAAS MedSTAR Kids. Here I coordinate and perform retrievals of sick babies and children from the country and metropolitan areas of SA.

I have engaged Service Provider, Prosper Paediatrics to provide and manage the administrative services and consulting facilities I need to help me provide the best clinical care I can.
Prosper Paediatrics provides reception services to my practice. Please contact them about bookings and any other matters. It, through its staff, systems and procedures, will reliably and promptly ensure I am kept informed, see any requests, questions, letters and reports. They take care of the administrative side of things so I am able to concentrate on clinical care.
Prosper Paediatrics and their reception staff prioritise the responsive, sensitive care I want from them for my patients. The company and its staff are experts in private paediatric practice administration, including all relevant aspects of Medicare, private health, billing, rebates and all the other aspects of paediatric specialist care for babies and young children.
my Neonatal care fee gap schedule:
The gap is the portion of my fees not covered by standard Medicare rebates or, if for admitted care, your health fund’s remittance.
Most families are eligible for substantial additional Medicare Safety Net rebates, which further reduce these standard gaps. Please contact my Accounts or Practice Manager for further information.
The maximum out-of-pocket cost for your account will be $600. ($850 max for twins)
This gap may apply where an attendance to your baby is unplanned but necessary and urgent.
Families should budget for this in case this kind of attendance is needed.
Otherwise, if no unplanned attendance is needed during your baby’s stay, your maximum gap will be
$500 where initial attendance to baby is at a planned elective procedure (e.g. elective C-section) or
$350, where all attendances to your baby after delivery are routine or within normal rounds.
My background, training, experience and research
I am trained in the Bayley Scales of Infant and Toddler Development and Hammersmith Infant Neurological Examination for early detection of atypical movement.
Having studied medicine and completed most of my paediatric and neonatal training in the major hospitals in South Australia, I have enjoyed post-fellowship rotations at the Melbourne Royal Children’s Hospital NICU and Monash Children’s Hospital Neonatal Unit. Both are busy units and see infants referred for subspecialty input from across Victoria.
I have published papers including research on the use of cord glucose to predict the risk of low blood sugar in babies. I am an avid educator, seeing education as a means to encourage quality, evidence-based and up-to-date medicine. I am a clinical lecturer at the University of Adelaide and am completing a post-graduate degree in medical education. I train health professionals in the resuscitation of the newborn and child.
Outside of my work, I am energised by spending time being active in nature and with my family and friends.
